The first thing you need to do is decide which character you’re wanting to dress up as this year. It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl, there are plenty of each in the Star Trek series.

One of the more popular choices from the new movie is the female character Uhura.

Of course the guys are always fighting over whether to go as Captain Kirk or Spock, even Scotty the engineer is a popular choice.

To really go for the authentic look you’re going to want to get black pants and black shoes to go with the top.

These are items that you can purchase outside of a costume store, so you can save some money. The color of shirt you’ll need all depends on which character you want to be. With Kirk you’ll need a gold colored shirt with the Starfleet emblem on the left breast. The emblem is the same for Spock, but his shirt is blue. Scotty has a red top.

Depending on your character you’ll need different accessories to go along with your costume. All the characters should get a phaser, the futuristic handheld weapon commonly seen in the Star Trek universe. If you decide to go as spock you’ll definitely want to carry his scientific instrument, the tricorder. You may want to use a tricorder for Scotty as well.
